One thing I enjoy doing is experiencing things. Now, now, hear me out.
With that in mind, and with my bulging gut from the holidays, I figured it was about time to do something about my diet. I lost 30 pounds on the Body for Life diet a few years ago, but I wanted to try something different. My cousin Atulya (cousin formerly known as Lee) follows the “Raw Diet.” I may still think he’s a little crazy, but at the same time, I admire his dedication and his self-control. So I kind of wanted to try it for myself.
So I formulated the following plan. For 30 days, I’m going to be vegan, the first week of those 30 days, I’ll do the Raw Diet. To go along with this, I’m going to run every day. I’m curious about a few things: how much weight I’ll lose, how I’ll feel, and how much better at running I’ll get.
This is actually day #2, and though I haven’t cheated yet, I’ve desperately wanted to. I don’t really crave meat, I just crave starchy things. I could eat two full cans of pringles right now. I also have had no energy the latter half of today, but I came down with a cold on Monday (day before I started), so I think that’s been part of the reason. Atulya also mentioned that when people try the raw diet, you may feel worse and get sick for the first couple days as your body gets rid of toxins. If you’re eating nothing but uncooked fruits and veggies, you are hyper cleansing your body, so I suppose it makes sense.
I’ll be updating as I go, as long as I don’t collapse.
Go for it! I hope it works and that it’s not something where it all gets gained back as soon as you vary the diet. Were I younger, I might try it with you. Glad you’re in touch with Lee; give him our love.

I did 3 weeks of no “meat” this summer but definitely not vegan. I ate eggs, dairy, and fish and still felt more tired, etc. I think that your experience will end up being more like when I couldn’t eat solid food for 6 weeks. Eventually I got completely used to it and it didn’t even matter if I was out with friends who were gorging at a restaurant, I wasn’t missing the food. The downside is choice in your case. I had no choice medically, but this trip is one you can decide to get off when you like. If you do think about quitting I would say “Buy the ticket, take the ride” and try to finish. You can do what you put your mind to.
Good for you Morgan… the first couple weeks are tough.. I would know. Anyway, good luck. Let me know if you need some support or a “hot” date to a vegan restaurant in Chicago sometime 😉 Miss ya.
