The flourescent lights of the electronics store burn
With the refrain “Silver Bells” playing
It is christmas time in the city
Old man winter has returned with a vengence
The river nostalgia gushes through my vains
Memories that have no connection
Yet seeming importance
Every year I pretend it will make sense
Yet it passes through felt, but never understood
Shoppers pass through with artificially warmed hearts
Here to buy the latest and greatest
The latest thing that will complete them
The outliers are never seen
The predictability is scary
Soon it will be Christmas day
The longing for real human connection
Lovers that never meet
Or are they lost in the city sidewalks
Busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
What is Christmas spirit?
Something I ever had?
Hear the snow crunch
See the kids bunch
See me walk by alone
Just moving from this to that
Just the next automaton
Lost in the bustle
Unable to hear the silver bells
