Now we watch the season start and see where all we were wrong. I love football.
Did you make picks on what’s going to happen in the playoffs? There really need be only one, natch:
Steelers over Eagles, in the game that should have happened last year.
Actually, if you noticed, I’m picking the steelers to miss out on the playoffs this year…and because I’m never wrong, you won’t get to see that matchup.
By the way, I just noticed this:
So here’s my pick: The Chicago Bears. Easiest schedule in the league. Inferior division and conference. Underrated running game. One All-Pro receiver in Muhsin Muhammad. A defense that has a chance to crack the top-five, helmed by some playmakers (Briggs, Urlacher, Harris, Tillman) and what could turn out to be the best secondary in the league (now that Mike Brown is back). A sizable home-field advantage, especially in November and December. Very good coach (Lovie Smith) who had them playing hard in October and November until their quarterbacks did them in. And best of all, NOBODY is talking about them. In fact, Sports Illustrated ranked them 32 out of 32.
What’s the big problem here? The quarterback. They’re playing a fourth-round rookie (Kyle Orton) who’s loved by the coaches and players … but he’s still a fourth-round rookie. So here’s my question: Even if he’s hit-or-miss, it’s not like he’s going to be much worse than Kyle Boller, Bledsoe, J.P. Losman, Patrick Ramsey or half the crappy starters in the league. Anyway, that’s my 2005 sleeper — I think they’re going 10-6 and losing by 30 points in the first round of the playoffs. You heard it here.
(And if they finish 4-12, you didn’t hear it here.)

Bill Simmons picks the Bears as the big sleeper. Yay!
It’s kinda freaky how similar Simmon’s and my picks are…xept for chicago, everything else is just about spot on.
OK, so my Steelers v Eagles in the Superbowl pick was sentimental. The fact that their first-team offense couldn’t score anything in the preseason has me worried intensely.
But you never know. Personally, I think Big Ben has to start ignoring his girlfriend (Natalie Gulbis — a golfer. GIS her name and prepare to drool), a la Nuke LaLouche in Bull Durham.
Tim lives in Pittsburgh, by the way. And to quote him “it’ll only be a matter of time until Ben throws a couple picks in one game, and everyone’s demanding Tommy Maddox back.” Without Plaxico, and with Duce Staley on the way out in a hurry, it’s hard to be very scared of them this year. But you never know.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Big Ben will be an excellent QB in the NFL…I bet he might go #1 in the draft over both Eli Manning and Philip Rivers if they had a redo…BUT
The steelers do not have anyone who can spread the field for him. I’m NOT a Plex fan, he dropped way to many balls to be considered an elite receiver, but the one thing he did do was keep the safeties tied up down the field. That left Ward and Randel EL free to roam underneath. Moving Randel El from the slot to the outside will absolutely kill his productivity (same thing would happen to Branden Stokely in Indy if they were forced to move him outside).
Bottom line is defences can stack 8 men in the box against the Steelers running game because they have no fear of any steelers getting behind the secondary deep. Hines Ward will avg. 8 yards a catch and the Steelers will have trouble sustaining drives consistantly. That’s a tough thing for a second year QB who has huge expectations from a football crazy town (and from himself).
The Steelers special teams is excellent. The defence is great against the run, and a little shaky in the secondary which sometimes gets covered up with an above avg. pass rush. This team won’t be terrible, but the AFC is sooooo tough this season, I think there’s a good chance they miss the playoffs.
/end boring rant on a team I don’t even like that much
